Theres not much remaining of the Vampire Hotel that used to sit in the hills of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area located in southwestern Kentucky and northwestern Tennessee. Rod Ferrell and his Vampire Clan

used to hang out there in the late 1990s, but after Ferrell and his vampires set out across four states to commit a double-murder, the structure, which was already in an advanced state of ruin, was demolished.

Some vampire wannabes still trek up the hills to soak up some of the energy left there by Ferrell, also known as Vesago. All that remains of the building is its foundation, but evidence of its popularity as a site for vampire pilgrimages can be found in the charred bits of wood that was used for bonfires and the graffiti scrawled on some of the 10-foot-high portions of the foundation walls. Vampires, pagans, and disciples of the macabre have drawn skulls, power numbers, pentagrams, and numerous references to the antichrist. In addition, there are invitations to those who would make such pilgrimages to follow Ferrell to death and those who venture here need not fear evil.

By the time that he was 16, Roderick Justin Ferrell had joined his mother, Sondra Gibson, a sometimes waitress/dancer/hooker, and about 30 other vampires playing Vampire: The Masquerade in rural southwestern Kentucky. Gibson was later quoted that she saw nothing wrong in playing the game with her son. After all, she commiserated, it was hard in these times to find some activity that parents could do together with their kids. The vampire mom eventually earned a felony conviction for writing a very explicit letter to a 14-year-old boy inviting him to join her in a vampire ceremony that involved sexual intercourse.

Rod Ferrell began the school year in September 1995 by being expelled. This suited him just fine. Now he could play the vampire lifestyle to the fullest, sleeping all day and carousing all night with his vampire clan. Rod and his children of the night went up into the Kentucky hills and hung out at an old building that they renamed The Vampire Hotel. In October, one of their night terrors drove Rod and a group of

teenagers to break into an animal shelter and set about beating, mutilating, and stomping 40 dogs, viciously killing one of them. Later, Ferrell would tell psychiatrists that he had tortured and mutilated small animals since the age of nine.

It was about this time that Ferrell decided that he was Vesago, a 500-year-old vampire that had returned to Earth with a special mission. He had been assigned to open the Gates to Hell.
